Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is sod?
Sod is pre-grown grass that is sold in rolls, allowing for quick and easy installation of a new lawn.
How much sod do I need?
To determine the amount of sod needed, measure the length and width of the area you want to cover and multiply them to get the total square footage. Our sod is sold by the 10 square foot roll.
When is the best time to install sod?
Sod can be installed any time of year, but the best times are during the cooler months of spring and fall when the grass can establish roots before facing extreme heat or cold.
How do I care for my sod after installation?
Proper watering is crucial for sod establishment. Water the sod thoroughly immediately after installation and keep it consistently moist for the first couple of weeks. After that, gradually reduce watering to encourage deep root growth.

How to Install Sod

  1. Prepare the Soil: Clear the area of any existing grass, weeds, and debris. Loosen the soil to a depth of about 6 inches and level the area.
  2. (Optional) Apply Fertilizer: Spread a layer of starter fertilizer to provide essential nutrients for the new sod.
  3. Lay the Sod: Start laying the sod along a straight edge, such as a driveway or sidewalk. Butt the edges together tightly without overlapping. Stagger the joints in each row, similar to the pattern of bricks.
  4. Trim the Edges: Use a sharp knife to trim any excess sod along the edges and around obstacles like trees or flower beds.
  5. Water Immediately: Water the newly installed sod thoroughly to ensure the soil underneath is moist. Continue to water daily for the first two weeks, keeping the sod and soil consistently moist.
  6. Maintain Your New Lawn: After the initial two weeks, reduce watering frequency to encourage deep root growth. Mow the sod for the first time once it reaches about 3 inches in height, making sure not to cut more than one-third of the grass blade at a time.
